Lydia Ann Butera passed away peacefully on July 14, 2011, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born on February 1, 1959, and attended Lake Castle Private School, Mount Carmel Academy, and the University of Southwestern Louisiana (currently the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). She was the Headmistress of Lake Castle Private School in New Orleans. She was preceded in death by her father, Clendon J. Butera, and her grandparents, Elizabeth Grossimon Schiro and Roman Michael Schiro, and Lucille Halphen Butera and Samuel Joseph Butera. She is survived by her beloved mother, Mary Jane Schiro Butera, her brothers Barry (wife Rhonda), and Brian (wife Cindy), her sisters Elizabeth B. Fitzpatrick (husband Dan), and Jane B. McGovern (husband Danny), and her adoring nieces and nephews: Brittany, Barry, Blake, and Bryce Butera; Benjamin, Bobby, and Brandon Butera; Daniel and Kevin Fitzpatrick; and Maggie, Madelyn, and Michael McGovern. She is also survived by her dear friend, Carter Perry, and her loving aunts, Elizabeth Parent (husband Beauregard) and Kathleen Duvic (husband Henry), along with a host of dearly loved cousins, friends, and her extended Lake Castle family at the New Orleans, Slidell, and Madisonville campuses.
Lydia lived her life to the fullest and was happiest spending time with family and friends, travelling to many parts of the world, and going to the beach. One of her goals at Lake Castle, to "give highest priority to developing in our students the one quality that marks true success: integrity," was carried out on a daily basis. Lydia's sincere generosity is exemplified by her many charitable actions, and she took great pride in becoming involved in worthy organizations including New Orleans Boys' Hope, the Breast Cancer Foundation, the Good Shepherd School, the American Red Cross, and the New Orleans Medical Mission Services, where she served as a board member. She will be remembered as a loving and caring daughter, sister, niece, aunt, nanny, educator, and true friend.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by Mass at 1:00 PM, at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3368 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, La. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of the above-named charities in Lydia's name.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to her cousins Lisa Hickey, Christine Smith, and Colette Raphel and to the caregivers at East Jefferson General Hospital for their kind and compassionate care for the last month.
