John E. Wells, one-time leader of several west-side veterans groups, died from cardiac arrest Wednesday in Good Samaritan Hospital. The Price Hill resident was 73.
He was past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Globetrotters Post 6428 in Addyston. Mr. Wells also was past commander of American Legion Chambers-Hautman Post 534 in Riverside, past chef de guerre of 40/8 Voiture 29 in Northside and a member of the Southwestern Ohio Conservation Club.
"It was his thing to bring his kids up to respect their Americanism," said his daughter, Judith Owens of Price Hill. "He did a lot of work in orphanages. He also used to work the festivals at St. Rita," the school for the deaf in Evendale.
Mr. Wells retired in 1980 after more than 25 years in the grounds maintenance department of the Cincinnati Park Board.
Other survivors include another daughter, Jacqueline Auel of Sayler Park; two stepdaughters, Lynn Jung of Delhi Township and Barbara Tonne of Anderson Township; a brother, Robert of Sayler Park, 11
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be said at 9 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church, Price Hill. Visitation will be 5-9 pm. today in Seifert-Hardig & Brater Funeral Home, Sayler Park. The VFW will conduct service at 7 pm. today in the funeral home. 'I'he American Legion service follows at 7:45 pm.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cleves. Memorials may be made to the National Home of th
