Dearest friends. It is with unbelievable mixed emotions that I write to tell you of the passing of Lynne Therese Bulliard Gaard at 5:35am EST. Although, I long to go inward and process this by myself, I realize she was not just a mother to my sister and I, but rather a mother, friend, sister and angel to so many here on this site and elsewhere. So I will trudge on and dutifully write this note and convey whatever I can to help you all process as well. Although she was to be discharged from the hospital yesterday at 11am, I received a call from the hospital saying she had suffered another pulmonary embellism and was being taken to the ICU. I rushed over to the hospital and was met by a team of doctors, one of whom described a very dire situation in which Mom's blood pressure was extremely low despite medications to stabilize this life threatening situation. Upon further blood analysis, doctors informed me she was suffering from a siptic (sp) situation. Apparently after the trauma of the clot, infection sets in and the entire vascular system had grown tremendously, spilling blood out into tissue etc. Hence the low blood pressure. Despite countless blood tranfusions and fluids to bolster volume, the blood pressure could not respond favorably. We were told cardiac arrest would be imminent and could really not be avoided. Ashley and I were there with Mom when she went into arrest (just after I looked her straight in the eyes and told her, your Master is always with you). They hurried us out of the room to perform CPR and it seemed like 10 people descended upon her in 10 seconds. Frightening for both my sister and I to say the least. After what seemed like endless pounding and beating on her already stressed and infirmed chest to revive her that was obviously not working, I asked them to please stop. The entire team seemed at once to understand and did stop. She was gone and we all knew it. Mom had one last lesson to teach us however and it was beautiful, magical and so very spiritual. After what seemed like about 30 seconds or more, I heard my sister gasp and simply say Stephen! Seemed like when nobody was looking, Mom had crept back into that beaten up old beautiful body to teach us all a very valuable lesson. One of the doctors hurried my sister and i into corner to warn us that this could very probably be due to lingering effects of medication administered during the arrest. He suspected within 30 minutes the "reality" of the situation would set in. I knew better as many of you all do. The incredible power of my mother and the wonderful creative ways she always taught us, have always astounded me. There are quite a few lessons in her last trick that I will cherish forever. Thank you Mom. Thank you. Well 30 mins came and went, as did several hours and she hung on long enough to have a wonderful conversation with me through our hands. We spoke on a touching level. I asked her, if she would like to dance. We did, except when I was watching us dance, I noticed we were both children of no more than 8 - 10 years old. Thanks much for the dance Mom. This, I will also take with me to my own transition. Hours later, her wonderful nurse told me that the bicarbonate they were giving her to squash the vascular system and create blood pressure had stopped being effective at all. She quietly and peacefully crept back out of that body that no longer deserved her and left at 5:35 am. To all of you on this site, her friends and family . . . it has been a priviledge to walk the last steps with this amazing woman who gave me my first steps. I cannot thank you enough, on behalf of Ashleigh and myself, for the unbelievable support and never ending love you have shown in these past several weeks. I am truly honored to call myself her son. As so many of you know, she is not gone. She has simply changed. "What a caterpillar calls the end of the world . . . the Master calls a butterfly." RS blessings With love, Stephen Gaard
