Notes
General:
Register 30 Sep 1897 (local newspaper obituary)
Nannie Buffington Hayes
Died of cancer at her home in Greendale Monday, Sept. 20th, at 5 a.m. She leaves a husband, Charles F. Hayes, and three of seven children born to them, four of whom preceded their mother to the home above. Mrs. Hayes was 43 years of age with a quiet, loving disposition, which endeared her to many friends. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Shirely officiating. The Women's Relief Corps, of which Mrs. Hayes was an officer, also held short and impressive services, after which the remains were followed to the beautiful cemetery and placed in the vault, the casket buried under a mountain of floral offerings. In the beautiful words of the minister, "She is not here. She has risen".

The Buffington Family in Dearborn County, Indiana (from a manuscript on file in the family section)
By McMeen and Zeboski
Nancy (Nannie) Buffington was born 15 January 1854 and was married 11 February 1880 to Charles F. Hayes, a Lawrenceburg attorney. An interesting account of their wedding appeared in the 19 February 1880 edition of the local newspaper. "The bride was attired in a beautiful wine-colored cashmere and brocaded satin, trimmed in fringe; her ornaments were natural flowers. The groom wore a full dress suit". A long list of wedding gifts was given, including a sewing machine, set of furniture from the bride's father, large oil painting, cut glass sugar bowl, silver sugar spoon lined gold, pin cushion, mantel ornaments, and many pieces of silver are. The couple had a home in Lawrenceburg.

Evidently the wedding guests were snowed in as "owing to the weather, the guests had to stay all night". A daughter was born to Nancy and Charles 4 March 1886, according to local birth records. At least three children '96 Charles F. Hays, Jr., Helen Hayes, and Dorothy Hayes '96 were living in 1897 when they were mentioned in the probate record of William C. Buffington's will in 1897. Four children who died young are buried in Greendale Cemetery, Lawrenceburg, by Nancy Hayes: two unnamed infants and Everett N. Hayes, born in December 1880 and died 27 November 1882, and Harriett Hayes, born 25 January 1886 and died 25 June 1886 (probably the child above whose birth was not recorded until March 1886). Nancy Hayes died 20 September 1897.

Per 1880 US Census, 6/2/1880, West High Street, Lawrenceburg, Dearborn County, Indiana
Charles Hayes is a 27 year old white male, a lawyer by trade, born in Indiana, his parents in Ohio. His wife, 25 year old Nancy, was born in Indiana, her father in Indiana, her mother in Ohio.
