The former director of Slidell's Planning Department was killed in an RV crash on Interstate 10 in south Mississippi Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Martin Bruno, 78, died at the scene of the crash near Menge Avenue on Saturday. His wife, 77-year-old Eileen Bruno, was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital, authorities said. Authorities said the accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. when Bruno's motorhome left the roadway and struck a tree.

Westbound I-10 traffic was backed up for hours as lanes were closed to allow the helicopter to land.

Bruno had been planning director for the city of Slidell for 14 years and was a former president of the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation.

"It's such a tragic accident," said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer.

Cromer said Bruno had retired in 2007, but was always willing to come in and offer his perspective on planning issues. "I used to bounce ideas off him from time to time," Cromer said. "He was very helpful in giving us accolades and wasn't afraid to critique us."

Cromer said Bruno attended St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Slidell.

Bruno also served on several boards throughout his career, including as chairman of the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of the Harbor Center near Slidell.

"I've lost a friend," said Ben Morris, a former Slidell mayor and police chief, adding that he and Bruno worked together for a decade.

The crash is still under investigation, authorities said.
