Beloved Woman. Who Has Many Friends Here, Dies at Indianapolis: Funeral Rites Here Monday
Mrs Mary Sunman Fitch, wife of Walter Hayes Fitch, passed away at their home in Indianapolis Saturday.
May 14, at 12:15 p. m.. after a lingering illness. '
Mrs. Fitch was the daughter of Harriet Van Zile and Thomas Wand Sunman. The Van Ziles were of colonial stock and early settlers in Ripley county, while the Sunmans came from Halthy Yorkshire, England, in 1819 and purchased. the Sunman farm from the government at that time. Here Mrs. Fitch was born August 30, 1838, and lived most of her life except ten years in Indianapolis and the first six years of her married life, which were spent in Lawrenceburg.
Always a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Fitch still found time to take a lively interest in the affairs of the day - a great reader, fond of music and poetry, it was natural that she becorne one of the organisers of the Veronica Club of Indianapolis, which devoted many years to the study of things cultural. Another interest was that of the Indiana Historical Society, of which she was a member for many years. Mrs. Fitch was a member of the Episcopal Church. The funeral. service Monday at 1:00 p. m. at Fitch Bros funeral home was conducted by Canon Chas. G. Reade of St. Stephens Church, Cincinnati, O.
Burial was in Greendale cemetery. The pallbearers were James W. Hart of Indianapolis, Allan Blackledge of Rushville, Ralph Dryer Sunman, Thomas Pitch of Lawrenceburg and Henry W. Leding and Dr. D. A. Wells of Cincinnati. Many friends and relatives motored from Indianapolis, Dayion and adjoining towns to pay their last respects to much beloved friend and neighbor.
Mrs. Fitch is survived by her husband and five children: Mrs. Henry W. Leding of Cincinnati, Mrs Brainerd
Ransom oi Montreal, Canada, Mrs. James A. Greenwood of Des Moines, Mrs. J. Victor Hay of New Orleans, and Walter Q. Fitch of Purdue University, Lafayette. One daughter, Leah Hayes lost her lite in the tragic fire which destroyed their home in 1892. The grandchildren are Mrs. D. A. wells, Olive Sue. Ransom, Albert Fitch Ransom, Mildred Lea Fitch, and Harriet Greenwood.
