Madge D. Hayes used to spend the whole year getting ready for Christmas.

She would gather her family each year on Christmas Eve at her home in Cleves and present hand-made ornaments for each of the children.

"She did the most gorgeous handwork you'd ever want to see," said her sister-in-law, Donn Sue Wood of Columbia Township. "She made them from felt for her grandchildren, her sisters' grandkids, her brother's grandchildren and my nephew, as well as for her first cousins' children. Counting everybody, there were 21 of them.

"Making those ornaments meant the world to her. She did it from her heart. She had arthritis and there were times when it would be really painful for her to do these teeny little stitches. But she always had them done in time for Christmas."

Mrs. Hayes died Monday. She was 76.

A Cleves resident, Mrs. Hayes was a retired librarian for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She was a member of the North Bend United Methodist Church; Cleves Chapter #295, Order of Eastern Star and Three Rivers Women's Club. She also was an adviser to Job's Daughters.

Survivors include her husband, Willard L. Hayes ; three sons, Dennis W., Terry Scott and Tony Dean, all of Cincinnati; a daughter, Cathie Jo Perron of Cincinnati; a sister, Ruth Esther Ohler of Cincinnati; a brother, O.J. Wood of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren. Visitation: 6 to 9 tonight at Argo Funeral Home, Cleves. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to North Bend United Methodist Church.
