ALLEGED STRIKER ATTACKS MARINE IN CANAL STREET
First Trouble Since Longshoremen's Walkout Occurs Near River
Public Announcement of the leaders of the striking dock workers that there would be no violence in connection with the strike of the longshoremen and screwmen went for naught yesterday afternoon when trouble broke out at several points along the river front as the men at work on the ships were leaving for their homes.
The outbreaks were worst in Canal street, in the vicinity of the Louisville and Nashville passenger station, and happened at a time when the street was crowded with men, women and children on their way to trains that left the city during the late afternoon.
Ernest Spangenberg, 706 Iberville street, Marine Corps petty officer, while in civilian clothes was slugged in the face by Sidney Winteler, 2305 Royal street, said by the police to be a striker , at Canal and Wells streets. Spangenberg was walking along the street and was struck without warning. A bystander protested when the police say Winteler turned on this man and was about to strike him when the man's son standing near knocked Winteler down. Motorcycle Patrolman Trhant arrested Winteler and put a stop to further trouble. Winteler was locked up at the Third Precinct station on a charge of assult and battery.

ONE DYING AFTER WHITE AND BLACK LONGSHORE RIOT
Innocent Dock Handler is Shot: Another badly Beaten.
While on the way to the longshoreman's hall to attend a meeting yesterday morning, Sidney Winteler, 33 years old, a stevedore living at 2305 Royal street, was shot twice and probably fatally wounded by an unidentified negro who had been participating in a free-for-all fight between white and negro union and nonunion longshoremen in Ursuline avenue, between Royal and Bourbon streets.
Winteler is in a critical condition in Charity hospital and attending physicians hold little hope for his recovery. Captain Inspector Jackson reported yesterday evening that the stevedore was unconcious and it was impossible to get a statement.
The police said Winteler did not take part in the fight but was walking up Royal street at the time. As he turned into Ursuline avenue one of the negroes shouted: "There goes one of them now." A negro in the crowd fired two shots. One of the bullets struck Winteler in the lower abdomen and the other passed through his left hand.
Several men who engaged in the fight are said to have received cuts and bruises but the police were unable to find any of the men. A number of negro suspects were questioned yesterday evening by Captain Inspector Jackson but the negro who did the shooting had not been arrested.
Shortly after the shooting of Winteler, Bernard Houston, negro, 21 years old, of 1010 Harmony street, was attacked by a crowd of white men at St. Philip and Decatur streets, a short distance from the scene of the shooting. Houston, who is a nonunion freight handler, was beaten on the head, face and body and received treatment at Charity hospital.
