Notes
General:
"Katie's father, Melchior WInteler, was from Mollis, Glarus, Switzerland, and had lived in New Orleans for 50 years at the time of his death. He became a naturalized citizen in 1876. He was a founder of the Swiss Society of New Orleans and a member of the New Orleans Rifle Club. At one point he and a partner operated a business at 109 Poydras Street called Winteler and Ricks, dealers in leather and shoe findings, tools, oils, etc. A write-up about their company appears on p. 199 of Pen Illustrations of New Orleans, 1881-82: Trade, Commerce and Manufactures."

Festival Of The "Societe Suisse De Tir"
Yesterday at an early hour the members of this society gathered at the house of Mr. B. Wiser, Treasurer of the association, on Bayou street, in the uniform of riflemen, and after shoudering their ponderous carbines, wended their way towards the Magnolia Garden, preceeded by a new and fine brass band just arrived from Bremerhaven, under the leadership of Mr. F. Hartmann. Though the day was very warm, the turnout of the society was nevertheless very imposing, and showed some fifty expert riflemen ready to do their duty, like the knights of olden times, in honor of "glory and of the fair ladyes." When the "Shutzen" arrived at the grounds they were marshalled into the hall of the society, and there addressed by President M. Winteler, who opened the ceremonies of the day by stating the laws and regulations of the shooting match.
Scarsely had this gentleman ended his discourse when the booming of twenty-two cannon, in honor of the like number of cantons of Switzerland, was heard and the shooting commenced.
The hall of the society was tastefully decorated with evergreens, gracefully etwining the colors of Switzerland, while the twenty cantons of this sturdy little republic were represented by twenty esoutcheons, which decorated the walls of the new hall. Targets had been put up at a distance of 200 yards, under the supervision of Mr. E. Hoehn, shooting master, and against these every effort was turned. Shots followed one another in rapid succession, and the air rang with the sharp crack of rifles, and the peculiar whizz of balls, flags were hoisted in token of success, and the shooting was kept up until evening, when it was proclaimed terminated.
Then followed a splendid supper, at which each one recounted his deeds like heroes of old; but when the President rose to proclaim the victors, all sounds were hushed. The awards were as follows:
First prize, field target shooting, Mr. Chas. Brown; second prize, field target shooting, Mr. G. Spiegg.
The first premium was a fine silver cup, the second a beautiful live young stag.
The following standing shooting premiums were awarded:
1. Dressing case, M. Wniteler. [possible misspelling of Winteler?]
Greatest number of bull's eye shots standing target - Mr. M. Winteler.
The entertainment, dancing and amusements of all sorts, was kept up until a late hour at night.
Time and space do not allow us to mention in detail the marvelous shooting with a Prussian needle gun, nor of the pistol shooting, etc.
But we can assert that the Société Suisse de Tir enjoyed themselves hugely, and that we have seldom seen such good fellowship as they displayed at this festival.
The society, under such officers as M. Winteler, President; A. Damont, Vice President; Bhd. Wiser, Treasurer; G. Spiers, Secretary, and E. Hoehn, Shooting Master, is evidently destined to become one of the features of the Crescent City.

First Day
On Sunday, at 9 A.M., the members of this club, whose festival had been postponed from last Sunday, on account of the inclemency of the weather, met at the Magnolia Garden. Scarcely had the last member entered the gounds when the firing commenced. It seemed to a distant hearer as if a war had sudenly broken out, so quick and so sharp were the reports of the hundred rifles which thundered their best at the far-off targets, in earnest efforts to obtain the beautiful prizes held out by the club as the reward of skill. One by one each of the members tried his luck, and tempted the ever wavering star of fortune, and one by one each met with dissapointment or success, as fate or skill ordered, until, at 6 P. M., the heavy boom of cannon was heard, and the firing ceased as if by enchantment. Nobly did the members of the society strive for distinction, and nobly were their efforts crowned. Several competitors happened to register the same amount of successful shots, so the a tie happened in many an instance showing thereby the skill of the atagonists.
In a neatly dressed table could be noticed the following prizes:
..........
Second Day
The shooting commenced with spirit and was carried out throughout the day in the same style. When the time for closing the match arrived, the result was proclaimed by Mr. H. H. Wulff, president of the society as follows:
TARGET NO. 1 -- Off-HAND SHOOTING,
First prize--M. Winteler
......
TARGET NO. 2 -- OFF-HAND SHOOTING,
First Prize--M. Winteler
......
PRIZES FOR MONDAY'S TARGET SHOOTING
Targets No. 1 and 2--First prize, M. Winteler, a silver ice water pitcher.....
.....
After the prizes were distributed the members of the club and their guests adjourned to the platform, where Prof. Hartman's band discoursed waltzes, polkas and quadrilles till the disciples of Terpsichore, at a late hour, abandoned the ground tired out with "tripping the light fantastic toe." Thus, amid merriment and pleasure, the festival of the New Orleans Rifle Club closed.

HALL OF THE SWISS BENEVOLENT SOCIETY
The ball given at the Deutsche Company Hall, corner of Bienville street and Exchange Alley, Saturday night, by the members of the Swiss Benevolent Society, for the benefit of their tomb fund, was a success in every respect. the attendance was large, and the arrangements were such as made the ball one of the most agreeable which has come off this season. At an early hour the fair devotees of Terpsichore, attended by their gallants, robed in beautiful costumes, began to arrive, and to the voluptuous swell of music moved into the spacious and brilliantly lighted hall, and commenced the dance. It was a scene dazzling to look upon. The graceful forms, the swan-like necks, the exquisite toilets, the sparkling eyes, lips brilliant and soft as dowy rose leaves, together with the seductive tones of delicious music, made up a scene full of alluring and rapturous enjoyment. Truly, it was
On with the dance! No stay when youth and pleasure meet,
To chase the glowing hours with flying feet.
It was good dawn when the music ceased, and the laughing, glowing fair ones gathered their mantles to seek their homes and rosy dreams.
The following is the list of the officers of the Swiss Benevolent Society: M. Winteler, President; J. F. Dilger, Vice President; Geo. Fatzer, Treasurer; L. Naef, Secretary.
The representative of the Picayune who was present on this enjoyable occasion expresses his acknowledgements for courtesies extended by the members of the society generally, and especially by the worthy President, Mr. Winteler.
It is gratifying to hear, as we did from Mr. Winteler, that this society is in a flourishing condition and since its organization has been the means of doing much good.

SPORTING Rifle Practice by the New Orleans and Swiss Rifle Clubs
The unsual weekly practices of the New Orleans Rifle Club took place on Sunday, 29th inst., when Major Wm. Arnis, one of the most excellent rifle shots in the country, made the remarkable score of a 199 points out of 250, on a 25 half inch ring target, thereby retaining the champion gold badge for off-hand shooters.
.........
At the club house of the Swiss Rifle Club the shooting done by the members was particularly creditable, and as they had five very handsome prizes to contend for, it made the shooting unusually spirited. The score is appended below.
This shooting was done with open sights, and would compare very favorably with Northern telescopic shooting.
