Melchior was the son of Melchior Winteler (b. 1839, Mollis, Glarus, Switzerland, d. 16 March, 1903, New Orleans) and Jane Elizabeth McArthur (b. 14 March 1845, d. 12 June 1929, New Orleans). He had many siblings, including Ida Winteler Briede (1868-1962).

His father, Melchior, Sr., was a founder of the Swiss Society of New Orleans, which constructed a tomb in Greenwood Cemetery for the use of its members. According to Swiss Society records in Special Collections at Tulane, Melchior Jr. was buried in the Swiss Society tomb at the time of his death, but was later moved to a vault receptacle on June 30, 1892,
