Rev. Hiram Thomas Whiteford, 75, was both spiritual and material mechanic. Besides tending men's souls, he understood all kinds of machinery and could do any kind of repair work. He died yesterday in his home, 528 S. Belmont.
In 1918, Rev. Whiteford, who had attained a reputation for mechanical know-how, was invited to spend his vacation in Colorado. While there he was mechanic for the winning car in the first Pikes Peak auto climb, plowing up the dangerous dirt road, fighting the snow, to the 14,110-foot summit.
Born in Switzerland County, Rev. Whiteiord was graduated at Lawrenceburg High School. He had made his home in Indianapolis 40 years. A minister almost that long he had served pastorates at Lawrenceburg,
Michigan City and Danville, Ill, in Methodist, Nazarene and United Brethren churches. Formerly he was pastor of Belmont Avenue Evangelical United Brethren Church here.
Although he had no formal mechanical training in a school, Rev. Whiteford took over mechanical arts classes at Technical High School during World War I. He also worked as trainer of mechanics for the
