ANSWERED THE LAST ROLL CALL

Richard Wells was born near Mount Gilead, Marion, now Morrow county, Ohio, Sept. 28, 1836. He was reared by Quaker parents. In 1857 he moved with his parents to Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa. The next year he returned to Ohio, and was married April 4, 1858 to Miss Clarinda Maria Armstrong of Cardington, Ohio. To this union were born seven children, all of whom are living and all were present at the funeral except one, J.L. Wells, the eldest son, who lives in Bozeman, Montana, and was unable to be present, but had made a visit to his father just a short time before his death. The other children are Mrs. Dora Everett, of New Hampton; Mrs. Ellen Noble, of Chariton, Ia.; George Wells, of Bethany; Mrs. Susan Long, Mrs. Rose Morton, and Mrs. Vira Etter, of Russell, Ia. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Wells engaged in farming until the Civil War broke out.

On August 1, 1862 he enlisted in Company H, 25th Iowa Volunteers, First Division of the fifteenth Corps. He was with Gen. Grant in his first attack on Vicksburg, and until the surrender of that place in July, 1863. He was in the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. In 1864 he was in the battles of Marietta, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta, and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. During his service he was in three charges; Vicksburg, Atlanta, and Fort McAllister. After the March to the Sea was made, he marched with Sherman's army to Columbia, S.C., Raleigh, N.C., Richmond, Va., and Washington D.C. He was honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa, in June, 1865.

In the fall of 1867 Mr. Wells moved with his family to Harrison county, Missouri, and had resided in this county continuously until his death, which occurred at his home in Bethany, Sunday, October 11, 1908, at the age of 72 years and 13 days. Mr. Wells was a member of the Presbyterian church at Martinsville for 25 years, and had ever been an honorable and respected citizen. He took great pleasure in saying that he was never drunk, never chewed tobacco, smoked a pipe or cigar, and never played a game of cards during his life.

The tedium of a long illness was borne with heroic fortitude and unfailing patience. No pain was so severe as to make his forget to be considerate of the faithful companion and children whose tender ministrations helped to alleviate his sufferings. Mr. Wells was of a helpful, optimistic disposition and the world has been made better by his having lived in it. As a soldier and as a citizen he had done his duty well and earned an unending reward.
