3 STABBED, ONE SHOT IN FRACAS
Fight Over Purse Erupts on Parade Route
Three white men were stabbed and a Negro youth was shot in an incident which erupted with an alleged purse-snatching on the route of the Arabi parade around noon Tuesday.
Stabbing victims were George Vogt, 47, 3037 Urquhart, Chris Silbernagel, 20, 1317 Feleciana, and Robert Wilkerson, 30, 2405 Munster Blvd., Meraux, La.
The shooting victim, Glenn Simms, 18, 3503 Benefit, underwent surgery at Charity Hospital for a gunshot wound of the left side of the abdomen. Police said he was in serious condition.
Police said that Silbernagel was in critical condition, having suffered at least three deep punctured wounds of the back. The other stabbing victims were not believed to be as seriously wounded.
Patrolmen Leland Comeaux and Wayne Cooper said that the stabbing victims were watching the parade in the 3100 block of St. Claude Ave.
A group of Negro youths walked by, and Simms grabbed a purse away from Wilkerson's wife, police said.
Wilkerson and Silbernagel chased Simms, and caught up with him in the 3000 block of St. Claude. While the men tried to get the purse back, the rest of the group of Negroes turned on the white men with knives, police said.
Wilkerson was stabbed in the back and the shoulder, and Silbernagel was cut on the neck, head and back. Both were taken to St. Claude General Hospital.
Vogt, a retired police sergeant, pulled his gun on the youths, and most fled. However, while his attention was directed to the rest of the youths, Simms allegedly stabbed him in the head with a bone handled kitchen knife with a six-inch blade.
The blade snapped off in the fleshy part of the head on the lower part of one side and was not believed to have penetrated the skull.
Police said that Vogt turned his gun on Simms and told him to stop. Simms allegedly pulled another kitchen knife with a blade eight or nine inches long and advanced on Vogt.
When the youth did not stop advancing, Vogt shot him, police said. Ptn. Cooper said that Vogt was entitled to carry a gun.
Vogt was taken to Charity Hospital, but was later transferred to St. Claude General, police said.
The purse was not recovered. Another member of the fleeing gang apparently picked it up.
A 15-year-old Negro youth was also arrested. Police said he was believed to be involved in the scuffling between the Negroes and stabbing victims.
Supt. Joseph I. Giarrusso ordered that a constant guard be maintained on Simms at the hospital.
Police said he was to be booked with aggravated battery.
