Henry Tonkin was born in 1848 in Manaccan, Cornwall, England to Benjamin Tonkin and Ann Tressider. His father is listed as a cord winder and shoemaker. Pictures of them in England show them very well attired. Henry had eight brothers and sisters, William, John, Mary, Benjamin, Jane Clarea, Susan and William Alfred (the first William died as a child). Henry and his brother left England because of restrictions on their religious beliefs and immigrated to the United States before 1870 when he appears in the 1870 Census in Linden, Iowa County, Wisonsin. Henry marries Mary Katherine Hays in 1878 in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. In 1900 he purchased the Old Carr Farm in Big Rapids, Michigan where he lived until his death on March 28, 1911. He was a farmer in Michigan but most likely mined for minerals in Wisconsin. He and Mary had seven children, Clara Ethyl, Dora Jane known as Jenny, Jesse, Amos, Harry Benjamin and John.
