Monument to World War II Dead in 3rd Ward Dedicated
Names of 72 Men Inscribed on Shaft
the 72 men of the Third Ward who lost their lives in World War II and the other men and the women of the ward who served in the war were honored Sunday at the dedication of a monument on S. Jefferson Davis Parkway at Tulane.
Mrs. Julia A. Malarcher, representing the mothers of the 72 men whose names are inscribed on the monument, dedicated it. E. L. Stieffel, who represented the fathers, accepted it.
Erection of the 30-foot monument was sponsored by the Banks Social and Carnival Club. Subscriptions came from persons in all parts of the city.

In accepting it, Mr. Stieffel said: "For our sons who fought, bled and died, I accept this monument. On every December 8 at 3 p. m. let us gather here in memory of those who gave their lives so the people of the earth may live in peace."

The $10,000 memorial is of white Mount Airey granite from North caroline and weighs 30 tons. The main shaft is a solid 14-ton piece.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF WEDDING HAILED
Mr. and Mrs. E. l. Stieffel, 2846 Grand Route St. John, Tuesday observed their 50th wedding anniversity with a family "get-together" at the residence. Participating in the celebration, Ray Stieffel and Alton Stieffel, both of Waveland, Miss., and Mrs. E. M. Schneider, Houston, Tex. The couple has 17 grandchildren, who also attended the observance.
Stieffel, a native of New Orleans, is a retired freight claim adjuster for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company.

STIEFFEL -- On Sunday evening, April 30, 1961, at 6:30 o'clock, EMILE L. STIEFFEL, age 85 years, husband of the late Arthelia Fayard Stieffel, father of Alton J. Stieffel of Waveland, Miss., , Mrs. E. M. Snyder, Jr. of Houston, Tex., and the late Emile Fayard, Ray Harwood and James Johnston Stieffel, grandfather of Mrs. T. L. Silbernagel and E. I. Stieffel II; also survived by 15 other grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Relatives, friends, employes of L. & N. Railroad and officers and members of Woodmen of the World Willow Camp No. 449 are invited to attend the funeral.
Services from the P. J. McMahon and Sons Funeral Home, 4800 Canal street, near cemeteries, parking in rear, at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, May 2, 1961, followed by Requiem Mass at St. Rose of Lima church.
Interment in Metairie cemetery.
