College Grads Have To Start As Office Boys Also, Writes Stieffel
_______________________________________________
I stand with Frank Herbert on the office boy question.
I think Frank is right in his statement about office boys, for the following reasons:
A boy does not have to discontinue school after he has started working. The city of New Orleans has provided night schools for them and there are numerous business colleges in which a young boy can learn the business methods used in the business worlds.
Boys who have graduated from high school and college have started to work as office boys while a boy who had quit school and worked from office boy up to mail clerk, attending high school at night has a position paying him a hundred and twenty-two dollars in a New Orleans railroad office. While J. T., I. H., W. W. and H. N., all graduated of Boys' High school and the latter, a graduate of Loyola university, are working as office boys for the small pay of eight to ten dollars a week. As for myself I quit school to go to work, and if I had to live my life over again I would stick in school, not because it was better for me but because of the pleasure you derive from attending.
At night school you have no pleasures at all. You must work until you have finished the course you are studying. You learn more in the business world in one week than you learn at school in a whole session. You learn the business methods that are not taught at school. You learn the art of self-respect, which is not taught in most schools.
I know of a boy who started working when 13 years of age as an office boy in a railroad office. He put aside all of his money and worked hard and attended night college, learning stenography. At the age of 17 he was a first class stenographer for one of the best rail roads in America. Why? Because he was experienced in the railroad line and it was a cinch for him to hold down the stenographer's position when she quit and so this proves that a boy does not have to attend school. He is a man before starting to work. The boy's salary is now one hundred and forty dollars a month, where as if a high school graduate was to try to hold down a position he would not be able to because he is "green" in the business methods.

Hijacking Loss Increased to $5150
GULFPORT, Miss. -- the loss in the hijacking of a truckload of whiskey owned by the Hancock wholesale house Dec. 23 has now been upped to $5150.
Herbert Stieffel, operator of a wholesale liquor house at Waveland, said further checks showed Friday an additional $2200 in receipts was stolen in the holdup.
He said a more detailed check of collections made prior to the hijacking resulted in the increased figure. He said receipts were stolen from the locked glove department of the panel truck.
Four armed, masked men halted the panel truck on state Hwy. 603 near the Kiln community.
Stieffel's uncle, A. J. Stieffel, 55, and Donald Dorn, 28, an employe, were left tied and gagged by the roadside in near freezing weather.
A light plane used in a search located the panel truck, emptied of its whiskey cargo, two miles east of the Sellers community later in the day.
Sheriff Gerald Price retained a private investigator to push an investigation of the case. An agent of the state tax collector's office also is taking part in the investigation.
Stieffel said liquor was enroute to a customer in another country when it was hijacked
