Joseph Neidhard, funeral home official
Joseph E. Neidhard, 59, of Mt Healthy, business manager of Neidhard Funeral Home, died Tuesday of heart failure while vacationing on a Caribbean cruise.
After the death of his father, Joseph Neidhard Sr., in 1967, Mr. Neidhard took over leadership of the funeral business as business .manager.
In 1981, Mt. Healthy honored him as Citizen of the Year. The Knights of Columbus of Mt. Healthy planned to honor him again as Citizen of the Year in ceremonies May 13.
"We wanted the honor to be a surprise and kept the secret from him until the ceremony," "said his sister, Shirley Meister.
Harry Boguszewski, past grand knight of the Madonna Council, said council members will decide at the regular meeting Wednesday whether to award the honor posthumously.
Mr. Neidhard sponsored numerous Knothole and Babe Ruth baseball teams, men's softball leagues, soccer teams and bowling teams. He was a charter member and a founder of the Mt. Healthy Life Squad and a former volunteer firefighter with the city fire department.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a past commander of the Wesley Werner Post 513, American Legion, and member of Charles Gailey Post 7340, Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Neidhard served as chairman for many years of the Assumption Church festival and was a member of the Assumption Holy Name Society and Catholic Kolping Society. Hw was also a member of Healthy Eagles 2193, Mt. Healthy Smokers' Club, Healthy Businessmen's Association, Mt. Healthy Alumni Association, Izaac Walton League and the National Funeral Director's Association.
Survivors includes his mother, Alma Neidhard, and a sister, Shirley Meister.
Mass will be at 10 a. m. Wednesday in the Church of the Assumption, 7712 Joseph St., Mt. Healthy. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Neidhard Funeral Home, 7401 Hamilton Ave., Mt. Healthy.
Memorials may be made to the Assumption School Educational Fund.
