Father Christian
Mother Mary Zimmer

Per 1900 U S Census:
Head of household at 1244 Clouet St, New Orleans, LA on 6/5 or 6/6/1900 is Christy (Christian) Silbernagel, a 29 year old white male, born December 1870 in Louisiana. He owns his home, is employed as a grocer, and though his parents were born in Germany, he speaks English and can read an write.
Living wih him is his mother-in-law, Lena Zimmer, a 63 year old woman born February 1837, in Germany where her parents were also born. She emmigrated to the US in 1853, and speaks English and can read and write.
Children in the house are:
Son - Philip, 11 years old, born January 1889 in Louisiana, is attending school.
Son - Matthew, 9 years old, born December 1890 in Louisiana.
Daughter - Mary, 7 years old, born March 1893 in Louisiana.
Daughter - Lena, 4 years old, born August 1895 in Louisiana.
Brothers of Christian in the house are:
Charles, 17 years old, born February 1883 in Louisiana, and is a grocery clerk, speaks English and reads and writes.
Joseph, 15 years old, born November 1884 in Louisiana, and is a grocery clerk, speaks English and reads and writes.
Next door, 1238 Clouet St, is a Zimmer family. Since there is no mention of Christian's wife Mary Zimmer or son Josh Peter Silbernagel, and the Orleans death index list the death of a Mary P. (F.- typo?) Zimmer 10/15/1898, two days after Josh Peter Silbernagel was born, it is likely he died in childbirth, and Mary died soon after.
Likely, Mary's mother moved in to take care of the kids.

Research:
I have found your search for Catholic Silbernagels interesting as I am from a branch of Catholics in New Orleans. I have met a dead end with a Matthew Silbernagel married to Maggie Roach in N.O. His father may have been named Christian and his mother Margaret Jones. Christian died in 1923 and may have been born in 1861. Any help would be appreciated. In the meantime, I am enjoying your messages, after all, we may be cousins. (Posted by Barbara Davis on Roots Web)
