A FIGHT TO A FINISH.
The Coroner's Jury Investigates the Killing of Mathius J. Silbernagle.
Last night Coroner Saeman concluded his investigation into the murder of Mathias J. Silbernagle, who was stabbed through the heart and lung on Aug. 13, at the corner of Clouet and Rampart streets, by Sylvain Pedelahore, from the effects of which he died a few days later. The first witness called was Edward Deris, who said that he was busy hanging up hams at Jake Sissung's grocery store, corner of Clouet and Rampart streets, when he heard loud talking outside. Heard Pedelahore call Silbernagle a big stiff, and say that Silbernagle was no good. He came outside, and saw his brother, Ben Deris, take Pedelahore away in the direction of Clouet street. Pedelahore had an open knife in his hand. One of the crowd said Pedelahore must have cut him, and Pedelahore said that Silbernagle struck him twice. Witness took Silbernagle, and pushed him towards the corner, and advised him to quit fighting and go about his business. Saw Silbernagle take the car, and heard him say to Pedelahore, "I will knock you out yet."
Ben Deris said he saw Pedelahore leaning against a post cleaning his finger nails with a pen knife. Saw Silbernagle came out Clouet street, Pedelahore asked Silbernagle if he had allowed that he would kick him the first time he met him, and Silbernagle said yes. Silbernagle then asked him if he said he was no good and Pedelahore said yes "you are no good anyhow." "You are a big stiff and always was a big stiff." Silbernagle remarked "don't do that again," and Pedelahore remarked, "yes I will, as I am not afraid of you." Silbernagle then struck him in the back of the neck and knocked his hat into the gutter. Witness jumped between them, requesting them to quit and told Silbernagle that he was a much bigger man than Pedelahore, and should not hit him. Pedelahore then retreated. Silbernagle advanced towards him, and witness again started to separate them, when Pedelahore made a blow at Silbernagle with a knife. Silbernagle also attempted to strike Pedelahore. While trying to separate them witness received a scratch on the right arm. After they had been separated Silbernagle ran after Pedelahore into the street. The men clinched. Saw Pedelahore Strike Silbernagle twice with his knife. Saw Silbernagle take the car; and heard him say to Pedelahore that he would get him yet. Pedelahore walked down Rampart street towards Louisa street. Witness told Silbernagle that he was a fool to go near Pedelahore when he knew he had a knife, but Silbernagle seemed determined to go after him.
Fred Arnold, of No. 128 Clouet street and Geo. Flohr, of St. Claude and Feliciana, gave similar testimony.
Jacob Sissung was standing in the grocery; heard loud talking and, going to the door, saw Pedelahore standing in the middle of the street with a knife in his hand. Both men seemed ready to fight. Told Pedelahore not to cut the boy and warned Silbernagle to look out for him as he had a knife in his hand. Silbernagle paid no attention to witness. Pedelahore then made a blow at Silbernagle with a small knife. Silbernagle was striking Pedelahore at the same time. Silbernagle then boarded a street car. Pedelahore going toward Louisa street.
Officer Philip Jacobs testified to the arrest, and the coroner's jury returned a verdict of death from the effects of a stab wound inflicted with a knife in the hands of Pedelahore, now in custody.
