Lutheran. Worked most of his life as a carman for Southern Railroad. His hobbies were fishing/listening to radio baseball games. Possibly played in a semi-pro baseball league. Everyone remembers the incredible and unusual kites he made, and sold to neighborhood kids for a penny if they had one. [Bill Silbernagel (b 6/9/1951) notes - one of the kites he left me after his death was at least 5 feet tall. Despite heavy cord used in first flight, it broke off. I found it later, but lost it on its second flight. The other kites were rectangular shapes with wooden frames and colorful paper panels]

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/military/wwd7-10.txt lists per Times Picayune the WWI draftees for the period 7/28/1917 to 9/8/1917 from four wards of Orleans. Not sure if this is the same John H Silbernagel, but the dates seem to fit with his age approaching 17. Check address with Linda and John

Per grandson John Silbernagel regarding draft status for WWI "Billy - This doesn't make too much sense. That has to be my Grampaw based on the street address. But here's the rub; in 1907 the federal government took over the railroads. Along about 1910-13 they implanted the U.S. Army to physically run the railroads. I remember my father talking about how he hated the Army uniform to the extent he would not allow his sons to join the Boy Scouts. I am the only one in this line of Silbernagels to wear an Army uniform. Then I see where Grampaw ran down and registered so fast he got a draft card number 17. Something is not right. Somebody has been pulling somebody's leg. Next. Who is Phillip Silbernagel from down on Rampart St.? "

Per grandson John Silbernagel "Here's a little anecdote for you to write down. Grampaw played baseball for the Hattiesburg Tigers. I believe he was a catcher. The old Terminal Superintendent at Meridian, MS knew him then and he said he was a "rounder" whatever that is. My old boss, the vice president, John Tipton also knew Grampaw and asked if I played baseball like my grandfather. He commented he was a "helluva" player."

Per grandson John Silbernagel "Bill - That "F" means Grampaw was an undocumented alien. I didn't know he was Mexican. By the way, whenever you get a chance, please send me a couple of your business cards. In about a year, my son William will be taking his CPA exam and I want to show him what it looks like to be successful. jas"

I understand she got pneumonia and passed. That was what I was told, and I was out of the loop at the time. > >As to Grampaw, he had been having heart attacks for some time. The previous weekend he and Grammaw were at out house. Grampaw was upset about an argument aunts Evelyn and Helen were having. I was in the back yard when Mother received the call. They found Grampaw at the Union Passenger Terminal, in the railroad washroom. It was either Uncle Bill or Uncle Tommy that "gave him a shot but it didn't do any good". A shot of what, I have no idea. It was probably medicinal nitro glycerin. Again, an 11 year old kid isn't given credit enough to understand, so what I wrote is what I understood.
