Eleanore Capretto died peacefully on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at the age of 89. Beloved wife of the late John Joseph Capretto for 62 years, and daughter of the late Joseph and Antoinette (Menuet) Black. Also preceded in death by her infant son, Robert Paul Capretto. Loving mother of John M. Capretto (Rose), David Capretto (Lynne), Carol Billon (Jimmy), Linda DePascual (Manuel), Gina Hartdegen (Jason) and Mark Capretto; grandmother of Christopher Capretto (Elizabeth), Daniel Capretto (Peyton), Jeffrey Billon, Danielle Billon Prendergast (Dan), Andrew Billon, Sean Hillis (Casey), Alexander DePascual, Gabriella DePascual, Lauren Hartdegen Crain (Stephen), Allison Hartdegen, Emily Hartdegen Porter (Mark); and great grandmother of Jacob and Andrew Capretto, Emma and Lilly Prendergast, Charlie Elizabeth and Hannah Hillis, and Nora, Gus and Ella Crain.
Eleanore attended Lutcher High School, class of 1950, and Soule Business College. She started her career at the British Consulate's office in New Orleans and left to raise her family. She returned to the workplace when her children were grown and worked many years at Derbes & Associates. She was very active as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her three daughters. There are fond memories of her dining room filled to the ceiling with Girl Scout cookies when she was the troop's cookie mom. Eleanore was a fantastic cook and enjoyed feeding her entire family and any extras that showed up at the door. Especially loved were the Friday night dinners with platters piled high with trout almondine and her delicious gumbo. She was also an expert seamstress, sewing her children's clothes, prom dresses and even doll clothes. As her family grew, "MawMaw" cherished babysitting, rocking and showering her love on each of her 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. In her later years, Eleanore became an avid football fan and never missed watching an LSU or Saints game. She was a charter member of the Ivy Garden Guild as well as a member of the Lakeview Botany Guild and the Federated Council of New Orleans Garden Clubs where she served in every office at one time or another. She was a Life Member Chair of FCNOGC, Past District 1 Director and received the Circle of Roses award. She was active in her church parish at St. Clement of Rome where she served as Vice-President and Newsletter Editor of the Young Elders organization. Eleanore always kept a suitcase packed for the many trips she took with her husband and they enjoyed many activities with the Jolly Jack Social Club. Her Wednesday ladies' lunch and card game at Two Toney's was a favorite weekly activity.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Eleanore's services on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at St. Clement of Rome Church, 4317 Richland Avenue Metairie, LA 70002. Visitation will begin at 10:00am, Mass will being at 12:00pm. Interment to follow in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.
