James O. Billon

James (Jimmy) Oscar Billon , a retired coach and educator, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 in Baton Rouge, LA from complications of a stroke. He was 76. Jimmy was well known in the New Orleans Metro area for his success in football and track and field in the 1940's and early 1950's, both for Metairie High School and Tulane University. He played guard on the 1946 Riverside League Champion Metairie Yellow Jackets. Selected to play in the 1947 Louisiana State High School Classic football game in 1947, coached by the late Hoss Memtsas. He was a shot putter under the tutelage of the late coaches; Tad Gormley ( C.Y.O. ) and Johny Oelkers ( Tulane ).

Jimmy served in the U.S. Army as Sergeant, Chief of Section, 424th Field Artillery Battalion, 8" Towed. During the 8th Army's assault on the Iron Triangle, Chorwon, Korea, he was critically injured in 1953 and was a disabled veteran of the Korean War. He returned to Tulane in 1954 to complete his degree; B.A. Physical Education. He taught school and coached football at St. Aloysius, John Curtis, and Kehoe Academy. He was a resident of Metairie for over 60 years, before retiring to Covington in 2001. Jimmy spent his last 3 years in the loving care of Veterans War Home retirement community both in Jackson and Reserve, La. He will be sadly missed by: his children; daughter Suellen Billon Schmidt, sons James Henri Billon and Timothy Jon Billon, son-in-law; Edward Schmidt, daughters-in-law; Carol Billon and Lori Billon, grandchildren; Jeffrey Billon, Danielle Billon, Andrew Billon, Paul Billon, and Brittany Billon, brothers; Henri Billon and Will Billon; sister-in-law Patsy Billon. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents the late Oscar D. Billon and Vera Smith Billon .

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. (in Metairie Cemetery); on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park. Visitation will begin at 11:00.
