LIBRARY INSPECTIONS ON AGENDA
Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - November 7, 1996
Author: KELLY KING St. Tammany bureau
Library director Jan Butler said repairs to the Slidell Library roof are 80 percent complete. The good news: The roof does not appear to be leaking where it has been repaired. The bad news: It is still leaking in the section under construction.

"The roof recently leaked over the public restroom, but that's where work is being done right now," Butler said. "The rest of the roof seems to be holding."

Butler told the St. Tammany Library Board of Control that even when the roof repairs are completed, renovation at the library will continue.

"Depending on the amount and type of work required, we may have to close the Slidell branch for staff and public safety," she said.

John Prendergast , the library board's new operations manager, said inspections of all 10 library branches are planned. "What this inspection will tell us is where we are on the buildings, what needs to be done and how major the problems are," Prendergast said. "We don't really know what we are facing right now, and we won't until we get full condition reports back on all the buildings."

Reports from these preliminary inspections will be made at the next Library Board of Control meeting, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Lacombe Branch Library.

Of special interest is the Covington branch, which was built about 10 years ago, he said.

Roof, wall and window leaks have been reported, and termite damage is feared.

"We want to get to the Covington building before anything major happens," he said.
