Per Obituary in The Times-Picayune Jan. 18 to Jan. 19, 2022
Carol Prendergast McManus passed away on December 14, 2021 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the age of 68 following cardiac and pulmonary complications.
Carol was the cherished wife of Neil McManus, the beloved mother of Lauren Elise McManus Lbik (Karol), Ian Gilbert McManus and Dale Nelson McManus. She was the daughter of the late Inez Crane Prendergast and John Luke Prendergast, Sr. She is predeceased by her brother John Luke Prendergast, Jr. and is survived by siblings Kathleen Prendergast Edwards (Ben), Michael Thomas Prendergast (Allison), and Ann Prendergast Graves (Carl) as well as Fabian Connelly Prendergast, wife of her late brother John. Carol is also survived by many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A graduate of Ursuline Academy and the University of New Orleans, Carol was a Certified Petroleum Geologist and was employed by the consulting firm of Atwater, Carter, Miller and Heffner where she provided geological interpretation for mineral owners ranging from individuals to Fortune 100 companies. After a successful career Carol retired to raise a family, residing in Covington and Tampa/St Petersburg, Florida. Carol enjoyed her profession and all things of nature and in particular, of the sea. She had a passion for collecting seashells from the many beaches visited during travels; curating collections for her personal enjoyment, as well as for gifting to those she held dear.
Among her sisters and cousins, she was known affectionately as the "l'il sandpiper" for her slight frame and artful wave avoidance strategies employed while shelling. Consistent with her love of nature, Carol volunteered for many years at St. Petersburg's oldest living museum, Sunken Gardens, caring for the garden's rescued birds. Carol loved family, friends who she considered family, new acquaintances with the potential to become family and family gatherings of all types, whether immediate or extended. She was a keeper of family connections and generational memories and loved "a good reminis" \endash a gathering of family where new memories are made and past events are recalled and narrated fondly or occasionally tragically, depending on the story and the mood. Carol loved her people and viewed everyone she met as having the potential to become her people.
A private service will be held when her family is able to travel and Carol's ashes will be spread in the places she loved most.
