Dear Linda and Bill,

I tripped upon your website yesterday and am beyond excited. My grandfather was Casimir Piontkowski.
Casimir had 2 sons: Joe (1921) and Leonard (1936). Both are deceased.
Casimir's children and grandchildren know nothing about the Piontkowski side of the family. I mean nothing. We knew the names of Casimir parents, but that's about it. Totally.
The reason? Apparently when my grandparents married, the family of Casimir's bride (my grandmother, Casimira [Cora Mary Kraczyk] wanted nothing to do with the Piontkowski's. The Kracyk's were very wealthy and apparently snobbish. (No one got married in the family and had children, except for Cora, my grandmother. Therefore, there are 7 adult Piontkowski grandchildren out there wondering about all their long lost relatives! LOL)

I have a wedding picture of Casimir and Cora. It was huge with maybe 10 attendants. I betcha Bronislaw, and some of the brothers are in the photo.

Please write back. This is so exciting!

Sincerely,
Cathy Larkins

Here's the wedding photos we have. I have no idea who the attendants were, except the guy on the back row, standing next to the girl with the blond hair: the guy is my great uncle Michael Kraczyk, (was a medical doctor in North Jersey) and his sister, Rose Kraczyk. Other than the bride and groom, that's all we can identify. The person sitting next to Casimir, kinda looks like the photo of Bronislaw from your website, maybe?

PS: Casimir was born 3-1-1889 and died at 56 at the US Naval Hospital in Philly as a casualty from being mustard-gassed at WWI at the Battle of the Argonne Forest (Meuse Argonne, France) and had fought in 4 battles.

Hi Mary,
Happy Weekend! Thanks so much for your reply. Oh my. How said. Seems like you are just as much in the dark as we have been. Too funny that we will be celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary this summer as well (and met in college as well.) :o)
Yes. My dad was Joseph Piontkowski.

After my uncle's death (Leonard Piontkowski) my aunt had unearthed some family documents and gave them to me.
I have a copy of Casimir's wedding certificate. He and Cora Kraczyk were married on 2-4-1920 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Camden.
On his death certificate (died at the US Naval Hospital in Philly on 4-1-1945.It's either the 1st or 2nd, hard to tell). My dad, 24, was in the military aboard ship with a destroyer escort in the Phillippines and the Red Cross found him and shipped him home as he then became head of household with a little brother (Leonard) about 9 years old at the time. Between Joseph and Leonard were 2 sisters born: Stacia and Eleanor. One died at 2 months old and one died at 2 years old., Family folklore says that Casimir was so poor that my dad had to dress the bodies of these 2 little sisters before burial. sigh...

On Casimir's Army discharge papers, it stated that he had brown eyes, brown hair, and was 5ft 7 in. and sailed from the US on 5-27-1918 and back to the US on 11-19-1919. He fought in 4 battles with lastly, at Meuse, France (10-4 to 11-11-1918) in the Battle of the Argonne Forest and was listed as being "gassed" on 11-11-1919. He was single, private 1st class with the 303rd Ammunition Train. (His grave is at the Polish cemetery in Chews Landing, NJ--and I think it is owned by St Joe's in Camden. Amazing the number of Polish soldiers buried there. Looks like they were all interred in a section together. My grandmother is buried there as well. I remember going to St Joe's for my grandmother's funeral. I went back and looked at the registry of guests at her funeral, hoping to find someone from the Piontkowski family, but found no one who I could connect with them.)

About 5 years ago, I found a copy of both Casimir and Laurence's WW I draft cards vis Ancestry.com. Laurence was listed as: DOB 8-2-1895 in Philly. He had grey eyes, light brown hair, and had medium build.
Casimir was listed as living in the same household at 1427 S Tenth Street (and I know that St. Joe's is located on Tenth Street as well!) The document said both parents were born in Poland.
I also found that Laurence registered for the WWII draft when he was 46.
His name was listed as Lawrence Jacob Piontkowski. and they lived at 1222 Van Hook Street in Camden.

Both draft cards listed Casimir and Laurence living at home when they registered for the WWI draft (1427 S Tenth Street in Camden).

It seems that both Casimir and Laurence drove milk wagons for Supplee Dairy in Camden before WWI. I know that Casimir went back to doing to same after being shipped home from France.
The 1930 census lists Laurence's wife as being Theresa.

So the DOB info-puzzle that I have been playing with, looks like:
Sophia- 1886
Ladislaw- 1887or 88?
Casimir - 1889 (I bet there were some infant deaths between Bob and Bruno.)
Bronislaw - 1897
Clara - 1903
and then wife Frances died in 1905.
Then it looks like the 2nd wife, Constance was about 16 years younger.

Oh. Not sure when my father started writing his name as Pointkowski. I think it was after returning from WWII in 1945 and marrying my mom in 1949. No legal name change, just did it. (My father was named Joseph Lawrence, I am assuming after his brother.)

Off I go to cut grass! Please thank your husband for creating the Bronislaw website!
