Born May 1, 1837, entered into eternal rest May 14, 1913, Caroline Major, beloved wife of Ezra Guard Hayes, aged 76 years, 13 days. A consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and of the Home and Foreign Missionary Societies of the same, active in the circles of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, the St Cecrlia Musicale, the Erthstane History Club. she has left a vacant chair and her absence will be keenly felt and her departure sincerely mourned.
The funeral servicés were held from the old Major--Hayes homestead at 1:30 o'clock on Friday afternoon in the presence of the relatives and personal friends of the decedent, Rev. C. D. Wilson, pastor of Hamline M. E. church officiating. In the course of his remarks Mr. Wilson said:
Among the many pleasant memories that will forever remain with us; of the beautiful life that has just ended here, will be our fond recollection of her devotion to her church. Hamline Chapel was dear to her heart. When but a bit of a girl she dedicated her young life to the service of our Master here and throughout all. these years it has been a place of safety and a place of rest to her. Preachers have come and preachers have gone; she was alike loyal to them all. Like a mariner's compass her heart always held steady and true, and so mid sunshine and storm. on the sea of life; her course has been forever onward; and upward. And now that she is anchored; safe within the vale we bow and call her blessed.
M R. EDITOR:
May I beg of you space to offer a tribute to one of the brightest, noblest women that this old town of Lawrenceburg has ever produced, and of whom this whole community may well be proud.
Caroline Major Hayes was born here May l, 1837. Here she was reared, educated, married and spent her life. Her father, Daniel S. Major, was one of the most prominent members of the bar in southeastern Indiana. On her mother's side she was the product of a union of the Hayes and Guard-families, the very first settlers of this community.
Her education was gained altogether in the schools of her native town. Her mother, a lovely christian lady, died when Mrs. Hayes was a little child, and early in life the care of her father's liouse and the oversight of a younger sister rested upon her shoulders, but she proved equal to the demands as she did ever after in all the emergencies of life.
The various experiences that fell to her lot developed a noble type of good, heroic womanhood. Her natural endowments were superior, her mind strong and active, developed by education and extensive reading; The people of her native city and many others, through the press, have been delighted with the
prducts of her ready pen. There was no hypocrisy nor cowardice in her nature. Frankness and sincerity were striking traits of her character. Her companionship made life brighter and she was a friend on whose fidelity one could always count.
In earlv life she united with the Methodist Epiiscopal church, of which she has been a faithful arid devoted member through all the years. She was ever in sympathy with and ready to lend a hand to every good work.
March 17, 1876, she was united in marriage to Mr. Ezra G. Hayes and in this relation as in every other, she was faithful and devoted. Her later years were saddened by the deaths of three beloved members. of her family, and gradually her health failed until on the morning of the 14th of May, she entered into eternal rest.
What shall I say more? She was a friend of a lifetime. Associated with my family, as the dearest friend of my sister, I cannot remember a time when I did not know her, and her going has made a void in my life, but friendship is eternal and "sometime somewhere" the severed links will be united and we shall know that "Life is ever Lord of Death and Love can never lose its own. "
