ACID BURNS FOUR AS TRUCKS CRASH
Glass Container Broken in Collision Here
Four persons were burned, three of them seriously, when they were sprayed by sulphuric acid following the collision of two trucks at St. Philip and Burgundy streets at 4:30 p. m. Tuesday, according to a report from the Third Precinct of the police department.
Injured were Pascal Kardis, 18 years old, 910 Ursuline street; Miss Mary Patania, 15, 1014 Ursuline street; Sam Briscoe, Negro, 24, 1726 Thalia street, and Clarence Thornton, Negro, 23, 1631 Felicity street.
Kardis and Miss Patania were treated at Charity hospital for first, second and third-degree acid burns on the face, hands and arms. Their condition was said to be serious and they were transferred to Hotel Dieu.
Briscoe and Thornton were taken to Charity hospital, where Thornton was treated for first, second and third-degree burns on the entire body, and Briscoe was treated for third-degree acid burns on the back and on both hands. They were transferred to the Flint-Goodrich hospital.
Briscoe, employed by Barada and Page, Inc. 858 South Front street, with Thornton as his helper, was driving his truck on St. Philip street toward the river. The truck, which was loaded with 35 one-gallon containers filled with sulphuric acid, collided with the truck operated by Kardis, going down Burgundy street. Miss Patania was a passenger on the Kardis truck.
The collision caused one of the glass containers to break, and the occupants of both trucks were sprayed with acid. Kardis' truck struck a fire plug, and the other machine hit a light standard at the intersection. A fire department pumper washed the acid off the street.
The district attorney's office will be consulted in the case, police said.
