THE PARADE accident Monday night at Orleans and Royal was more serious than originally reported. In addition to the three victims treated for injuries, there were at least four others knocked down in the chain reaction that followed the fall of the parade horse. The victims were Mrs. Catherine Alesich of 2027 N. Rampart and her three daughters, all of whom she said were knocked to the ground and painfully bruised. Mrs. Alesich related that the horse drawing a buggy immediately behind the fallen horse apparently bolted and plunged into the crowd. She said a spectator dragged one of her daughters from beneath the second horse.

Catherine P. Alesich "The Commissioner" born May 30, 1929, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After her short battle with jawbone cancer, she was taken to heaven on the morning of May 16, 2015. The beloved and devoted wife is survived by NOPD Sergeant John J. Alesich, Jr., (Ret.). She was the best wife and companion any man could have had. Preceded in death by her parents, Domiano Patania and Seraphine Chenniliaro of Italy; her twin sister, Mary DeCarvelho, sister Doloris Patania and brother Domiano Patania.
Catherine lived in the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny her entire life, always volunteering to preserve the City and ensuring its safety. She dedicated her time to the former St. Peter and Paul Church and its School, St. Aloysius High School, and the Academy of Holy Angels by serving on various PTO committees and as President. She was an avid bowler and acted as President of several leagues at both Sugar Bowl and Orbit lanes. Always determined to help others, she would be the first to give without their asking. She fed the homeless and provided clothing to those in need. She loved to cook, sing, and dance - all at the same time! She even went as far as to winning a radio contest and in turn was awarded the home's first air conditioning unit. Because of her dedication to the safety of her neighborhood and the City of New Orleans, she received a commendation of "Honorary Captain" from the NOPD along with a key to the city by the Mayor. During the 1960's, she was personally thanked by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and U.S. Presidential Asst. Harris L. Wolford for sharing her concerns. Catherine's heart was larger than life! Not enough can be said of the devotion to her faith and belief in her religion. She created a lifetime of memories for all those who crossed her path. We are blessed to know that God has our "Commissioner" in his hands and she is at peace in heaven. May she forever watch over all of us with her gleaming eyes and beautiful smile. WE LOVE YOU TO THE HEAVENS & EARTH!!!
