Son Hurries from Cuba Only to Find His Father Dead
Charles J. Moynan has arrived in New Orleans from Mercedes, Cuba, after losing in a race he made with death in an effort to reach home before his father died.
The elder Mr. Moynan died last Sunday night, just two hours after the cablegram, advising his son of his illness, had reached Mercedes. The younger Mr. Moynan left Mercedes within half an hour after he received the message, going to Havana, from which port he sailed to Jacksonville. From Jacksonville he went to Montgomery, Ala., by train and from that point hurried to New Orleans by automobile, arriving here only to learn that his father was already dead and buried, the funeral having been held Monday.
"I would have made any sacrifice to have reached my father before he died," said Mr. Moynan, "and I'm sorry that I was not able to do so. It gave me real pleasure, however, to learn of how kind father's friends were during his illness. No man's friends ever did more for him; and I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for their kindness."
The elder Mr. Moynan died at his home, 2688 Banks street. Previous to his death he had been employed for twenty-three years as a gas distributor for the New Orleans Gas Light Company.
Young Mr. Moynan is in charge of the mechanical department of the Luse Cane Harvesting Company at Mercedes.
