RITES SET TODAY FOR A. G. MOFFAT
Water Board Secretary to Be Buried in Metairie
Funeral services for Arthur G. Moffat, secretary of the sewerage and water board, who died at 10:45 p. m. Wednesday at Touro Infirmary, will be held today at 10:30 a. m. at the funeral home of Jacob Schoen and Son, 3829 Canal street. Interment will be in Metairie cemetery.
Mr. Moffat, who resided at 122 North Olympia street, was 65 years old and had been in poor health for some time, but remained on the job until last Friday. Saturday he was taken to the hospital. The cause of death was cerebral thrombosis.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Camilla Preto Moffat, and a daughter, Miss Myrtle Moffat.
Born in New Orleans on March 31, 1880, Mr. Moffat was educated in the city's grammar and high schools, business college and Tulane university. Later he became the first qualified certified public accountant in Louisiana.
Mr. Moffat entered the employ of the sewerage and water board on July 3, 1903, as a clerk and stenographer and later became assistant to Francis Shields, then secretary of the board. On October 14, 1920, the board elected him to succeed Mr. Shields, who resigned.
Mr. Moffat was a past master of Union Lodge 171, Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the Grand Consistory of Louisiana and of Jerusalem Temple, Shrine, and of the Woodmen of the World. He also was a member of the City Park board, the Association of Commerce and the American Water Works Association.
It was necessary to call a special meeting of the sewerage and water board Thursday to authorize S. N. Theriot, chief accountant, to sign this week's pay checks, since only Mr. Moffat was vested with that authority.
Board members declined to discuss the name of a possible successor to Mr. Moffat, but the board will hold its monthly meeting next Thursday at 10 a. m. at which time it will have the authority to name a successor. However, certain officials of the board privately expressed the view that the election of a new secretary will not take place for several weeks.
