TRAIN KILLS MAN, THEN WIFE DIES
Yakima County Car Collides With Northern Pacific.
YAKIMA, Dec. 12. \emdash Death claimed Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jones of Wapato this afternoon. Jones, a long-time employee of the county road department, was killed instantly when a west-bound Northern Pacific passenger train struck his car as it was crossing the tracks one mile south of Wapato. Mrs. Jones succumbed a few mements after she was informed of her husband's death.
Deputy Sheriffs Gene Pomeroy and Jack Runyan, who arrived at the scene a few minutes after it occurred, said the train struck the county car in the middle, completely demolishing it.
State Patrolman Henry Bolts said the car was dragged a quarter of a mile before the train came to a stop.
Braked After Impact
Deputy Sheriff Jake Guns quoted the engineer, whose name has not been learned, that he did not see the car, and did not apply the air brakes until he felt the impact of the engine against the car.
Officers said Mr. Jones apparently had been driving south on the track road and turned to the right onto the McKinley road. They expressed the belief he was blinded temporarily by bright sunshine, and did not see the oncoming train.
Mr. Jones joined the county road department as a patrolman in district No. 2 in 1917. He became foreman of the county engineer's shop at Wapato in 1924 and held that position until his death.
"What Will I Do"
Mrs. Jones succumbed suddenly after friends told of her husband's tragic death. She had suffered a stroke some time ago and had not fully recovered. When informed of her husband's death, Mrs. Jones said, "What will I do?" then leaned back in her chair and died.
Both came to the Wapato district with their parents, about 1900. They married a short while after coming to the valley.
They are survived by two foster children, and Jones leaves two brothers and one sister, including Ray Jones of Terrace Heights.
