Notes
General:
Per Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - January 4, 2007
John N. "Nick" McCabe Jr., who for two decades was a tennis pro by day and a Times-Picayune wire editor by night, died Wednesday of colon cancer at his New Orleans home. He was 74.
During his years on the courts at Audubon Park and the New Orleans Country Club, Mr. McCabe's best-known pupil was Linda Tuero, who won the singles title at the 1972 Italian Open, reached the singles quarterfinals of the 1971 French Open and played for Tulane University and on the 1972 and 1973 U.S. Federation Cup teams.
Mr. McCabe also wrote a tennis column for the newspaper about the game that had enthralled him since his childhood in Lincoln, Neb., where he spent hours watching players.
"He was completely self-taught," said Kevin McCabe, his son.
He was a pro for 45 years, the younger McCabe said, and he held two jobs for about 20 years.
"He usually wouldn't get home until after 10 o'clock every evening, and he'd start at 6 a.m. the next morning," Kevin McCabe said.
Mr. McCabe had lived in New Orleans since 1959, when he started work on the newspaper's copy desk. Earlier that year, he had graduated from Western Carolina University, which he attended after serving in the Air Force.
Besides his son, survivors include three stepsons, John Crane of Los Angeles, Morell "Mo" Crane and David Crane; a stepdaughter, Carey Williams of Costa Mesa, Calif.; two sisters, Eileen McCabe of Asheville, N.C., and Sheila Krekeler of Phoenix; and six stepgrandchildren.
A funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
