James was the son of Mary Browden and Alexander Long. His known siblings were John, Elizabeth, Henry, Mary and Thomas. He married Rachel A. Harrell about 1853 and they had eight children: Edmond, William, Omri (Omari), Erasmus, Mary, Sarah, James and Nettie.

In the early 1850s James and his brother John relocated their families to Lucas County. At some point after 1885, James again relocated his family to Pottawattamie County.

When the wife of son Omri died following childbirth, Rachel and James Long adopted the newborn grandchild into their household and raised him to manhood.
