Henry C. Long was my paternal great grandfather. Henry was born to Alexander and Mary (Browden) Long, in Indiana, in 1836 according to his death certificate. Henry was one of 8 children born to this couple (two children are unknown to me, may have died at birth or as infants): James, John A, Elizabeth, Henry, Mary Catherine, and Thomas J.- so Henry was fourth born. His father died in Indiana, 1846 - so his mother moved with her children to Iowa in the early 1850s. It is uncertain if they all came together - or not - but most of them are found in census of Iowa. Mary died between 1854 and 1859. Henry lived with one brother or another until he grew to adulthood; he married in Monroe County, Iowa to Mary Catherine Molesworth, in November of 1877. Henry & Mary Long had two children: Mack Grover Long and Leota Lucy Long; since this was Mary's second marriage, she also had two daughters from her first marriage: Dora Dicks and Zedda Dicks. Due to the hard times and emotional stress -(possibly he had the modern illness called "Alzheimer's"?)- Henry Long seemed to develop dementia and was put into the Mental Health Institution at Clarinda, Iowa, about 5 months before his death. Sadly, he died there and is buried in the institution cemetery. He was 70 years old. His wife survived him and lived until 1934 and is buried in the Russell Cemetery, Lucas Co, Iowa. Their son Mack Long was my grandfather, although he died in 1930 when my father was only about 9 years old. My father, Russell Long, is now also buried in that same cemetery at Russell, Iowa.
