OBITUARY
THE CHARITON LEADER
Chariton, Iowa
Tuesday, June 27, 1944
A. L. LONG
Abraham Lincoln Long, third son of John and Maria Long, was born on a farm in Cedar township, Lucas county, Iowa, on July 7, 1865, and departed this life at his home, 630 N. Main St., Chariton, Iowa, on Saturday, June 17, 1944, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 10 days.
He was united in marriage to Susie Wells in Bethany, Mo., on March 4, 1890. To this union eight children were born, one of whom, Lester, died in infancy. Those surviving him are Mrs. Lenore Daughterty of Chariton; Mrs. Cleora Matthews of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Fannie Beadle of Whitehall, Mont.; Mrs. Cassie Harmegnies of Des Moines; Loren Long and Lloyd Long of near Russell; and Eva Long of Chicago, Ill.
Mr. Long's entire life was lived on the farm where he was born, except for one year lived in Chariton. He then went back to the farm and remained there until last September when he sold the farm to his oldest son, Loren and he and his wife then returned to Chariton and located here.
He had been in ill health for several years but was able to be about until nine weeks before his death, when he became seriously ill with leakage of the heart, dropsy and other complications.
He was a patient sufferer but begged the good Lord to take him. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, a good citizen and neighbor and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was the last of his father's family to depart. He united with the Christian church in early manhood.
Besides his wife and seven children, all of whom were present at the last rites, he leaves 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren to mourn his death, also a number of other relatives and a host of friends. His father, mother, three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell, were held at Bethel church at two o'clock Wedesday afternoon, June 21, and burial was in the Bethel cemetery.
